Long Beach, MARAD, and 10 MWe Barge SMRs — A Port Signal for AI Load

On 28 July 2026 the Port of Long Beach became the first US seaport to partner with MARAD on commercial maritime reactors. BlueCore leased for ~10 MWe floating modules. Ports and AI halls share the same firm-power problem.

Key takeaway

ANS Nuclear Newswire (28 Jul 2026): USDOT MARAD signed a first-of-kind memorandum of cooperation with the Port of Long Beach to advance SMRs for commercial vessels, ports, and maritime assets — with USCG, DOE, and NRC on protocols. The same month the port leased space to BlueCore Energy for assembling, testing, and storing ~10 MWe water-cooled SMR modules on floating barges. Early, US-centric, not an AGICY COD path.

Why a port story belongs next to an AI campus

Long Beach plans to double container volume by 2050 and already talks in hundreds of megawatts for zero-emission operations. That is the same shape as an AI factory: electrify a 24/7 industrial node faster than the grid interconnect. Floating SMRs are being pitched as shipyard-built, movable firm power — closer to a barge genset than a 1.5 GW coastal plant.

BlueCore (emerged 21 Jul 2026, ~$10M pre-seed) is water-cooled, closed-loop, multi-year refuel, initially shoreside power with later vessel-propulsion ambition. It is a startup with a barge and an electric test vessel — not a licensed operating reactor. Do not confuse it with Radiant Kaleidos (1 MWe HTGR, INL fueled test).

What the MOC does — and does not

The MARAD–POLB MOC is cooperation on operational protocols, safety standards, inspection, and servicing nuclear-powered vessels at US ports. It is not a construction permit, not an NRC licence, and not a power-purchase agreement. Treat it as regulatory pathfinding. Energy investors should underwrite process, not advertised MWe.

Long-term vision

If barge SMRs become a classified, insurable product, Mediterranean ports (Limassol, Piraeus) and AI campuses could in theory share a mobile firm-power market. That is a 2030s option, not 2026 COD. European floating analogue: Denmark’s Seaborg CMSR barges — see European SMRs. Near-term AGICY energy stack: Alpine PV + BESS eval.

FAQ

Is BlueCore operating a reactor at Long Beach?

No. Public materials describe a lease to assemble/test/store modules, a barge, and an electric test reactor for flow simulation. Not a critical nuclear plant.

Does AGICY have a port SMR project?

No. Watchlist only. Not CapEx, not COD.
